In 1948 the president of Costa Rica, Jose Figueres made a surprising move: he abolished the military and decided to use the military budget towards the improvement of healthcare, education and environmental protection. Because of this reason in the past four decades, Costa Rica has enjoyed one of the highest standards of living in Latin America and is referred to as the Switzerland of Latin America. Traditionally, throughout history, a country’s military is used against its people first. To many, the lack of military presence is a huge deciding factor for moving to Costa Rica or having a second home there. Costa Rica is a peaceful country.
Costa Rica has no geopolitical value. This means that as a country, it is not situated in a geographical location that could be used to invade another country or possess a foreign asset. Therefore it has no vantage point, no geopolitical value. Throughout recent history, many countries in the world have seen sudden regime changes and ‘color revolutions’ and have always followed with the establishment of ‘puppet governments’ that are in alignment with foreign bodies that not always act in the best interests of the citizens of that country. Recent examples are Ukraine, Libya, Afghanistan, Irak and Syria, all of which have seen foreign meddling.
Costa Rica has no valuable natural resources that often become attractive to corrupt elements in government and industry alike. Traditionally, countries with a high degree of natural valuable resources become entrenched or overrun by cartels that desire to control the resources of that country. Costa Rica’s only source of income is green eco tourism.
